Nothing says “Willkommen in Duetschland” like going to write a new post and everything is in German…
…and there is nothing I can do about it. So I guess that’s one way to learn the local dialect, eh?
Veröffentlichen = publish in case you ever wind up in a similar situation. Uff da.
After a wonderful evening with family and friends, nearly 24 hours of airports and airplanes, and very little sleep, we have arrived safely and soundly in Germany! Our parents threw us a going away party. My niece has a good point,
Maddie: Why are we having a party to celebrate them going away? I don’t want them to go away!
Well said, Maddie. The party was a huge success. Many of you were there! We were so blessed to be able to spend time with our beloved family and friends before leaving. It was a beautiful Iowa day and there was no shortage of food! We had a wonderful time chatting with all the amazing people who stopped by to say “Gute Reise!” I don’t have any pictures from the party, but I have some of the decor and the amazing food.
Our “guest book” that we will get laminated. |
Cupcakes my mom, Maddie and I made. Check for a recipe later… |
Sign to hang in our new house made my Dennis and painted by Shelby. Love. |
It was such a fun night!! We hardly slept that night, and left for the airport at 4 am the next day. Teary goodbyes to our families at the airport were not easy and the waterworks were definitely on through security and in the terminal. It was a bittersweet beginning of a new adventure.
We got to watch one last Iowa sunrise from the airport terminal. |
Wow. We LIVE here!!
Being on base is a lot like the states. We use cash, most products are imported from the US, and everyone is American and a few employees are Deutsch. I absolutely LOVE hearing them speak. I can’t wait to learn the language.
However, there are still German influence. The road signs, the architecture, the electrical outlets, the way the windows open, the cars, the bathrooms… The hotel is very modern and European like, as are most recently updated and new homes in the area. Everything is ultra modern and contemporary. I am so anxious to begin house hunting.
Stay tuned…we are still in the “getting settled” phase but I will hopefully be taking a lot more pictures in the next few days! 🙂
PROST!

Im pretty sure the plane you flew on will be the same one that Shea will be heading out on in a few weeks (IF he goes through Germany, which I would guess is pretty likely). Sad but kinda fun! I hope you are having a BLAST!!! I SOOO want to be stationed there next!!!!!
