The state of being spontaneous…at the grocery store.
I love food. Today, my trip to the grocery store got a little spontaneous. This is usually a bad thing, especially when I had Whole Foods right around the corner from my house. I tend to get a little carried away. Sure, I get the usual things: cereal, milk, cherry juice, pasta, my all-time favorite 9 grain bread, and pickles, but it was when I threw the fresh baby spinach in my buggy (it’s not a grocery cart in the south, they call it a buggy) that something happened. I had a horrible pang of homesickness for Whole Foods. I remembered the smell of the store, the friendly people, the mouth watering produce section, the guiltless gourmet atmosphere and the undeniable feeling of being healthy just by stepping through the front door.
I love to try new foods, as long as onions and mushrooms aren’t involved in any way shape or form. I’d never had a starfruit before, and this cute lil’ thing seemed to be beckoning me. It was drab, dreary day here, so I figured I could use a little something tropical right about now. I had no clue what to do with the darn thing. When in doubt, google. Fortunately, someone had posted step-by-step instructions with pictures on how to prepare a carambola, or starfruit. It’s really easy. I highly recommend this tasty little fruit. With the crunchy, waxy flesh, extreme juiciness and a texture similar to a grape, this fruit is simply DE-lish. And who doesn’t love stars? I’m already hunting down recipes and other great ways to enjoy my new found favorite fruit. I’m thinking they’d go excellent with mango…
Now, if only Kroger had an olive bar…
