Happy Saturday!! Two weeks until wedding bells!! (Can you believe it?!) This post is just a continuation/wrap-up of the events from the Viper Pilot’s graduation weekend. Enjoy!
I failed to mention that there were not one, but two pups staying at our house over graduation weekend. We stayed in a hotel on the Riverwalk, but they were holding the house down. We took turns going back to let them out periodically. Drake is Elmer’s cousin. He is a year old yorkalier (yorkie/king cavalier).
He’s so cute and lovable, but he’s a little dopey, too. Case in point: we came home to this (see below) in his room one day. Apparently, he thought we were never coming home so he panicked. Nice job, Drakey.
After being cooped up in the house all weekend, we decided to take them out and about to get some fresh air. Riding in the car with two dogs is easier said than done. Elle’s nugget out the window speed limit is about 45 mph but Drake’s is 55 mph. Of course, they both have to ride on the same person’s lap, so I guess my window-down-speed-limit was 55 mph, too.
Drakey and the Viper Pilot do not exactly see eye-to-eye all the time and especially after the blinds incident, the Viper Pilot is not Drakey’s biggest fan. But it is a love-hate relationship. I mean, how can you not love Drake?
We took them to the base where they have a lot of airplanes out on static display. It was a nice day for a walk and we never pass up the opportunity to look at airplanes. We’ve been there before with Elmer, but we took our parents back and it is a great place to walk dogs. The weather was a bit hot, but it wasn’t raining so we couldn’t complain. Thing 1 and Thing 2 led the way.
It had rained for almost a straight week prior to this weekend, so the ground was a bit soggy yet. With it being as hot as it was that day, we were sure to offer the dogs plenty of water, but any time they saw a puddle of water, they took a sip. Drake? No, he just wanted to go for a swim. One second he’s drinking the water, I glanced away and the next thing I knew…
He is such a dope. 🙂
When we got back home, we wandered down to the park just down the street. It was mother’s day and my dad snapped this picture of me and the madre by the river.
Mush moment: I’m so grateful for “the mom’s” (my mom and the Viper Pilot’s mom) — they have done so much for the Viper Pilot and I over the years. They’ve supported us through thick and thin and even helped move our stuff halfway across the country at least 3-4 times. Being as busy as I have been lately, they have helped out with the wedding so much from everything to the centerpieces, to places cards, to helping with dress fittings. I only hope that some day, I will be a mom as awesome as them! They certainly have been wonderful role models for me. I know mom’s day was a while back, but I’m a little behind…besides, sometimes you just gotta get a little bit sappy!
We had a few foodie adventures that weekend as well. The Cove is a burger joint in a very…interesting…neighborhood just near downtown. This place is 3-in-1: a car wash, laundromat, and a restaurant. Is that a win-win-win? I’m not sure…
Don’t let that throw you off. The food is superb, if you have the patience for it. The line to order wasn’t so bad, but the wait for the food was an eternity, or so it seemed. I ordered the blue bison burger which had smoked in-house bacon, blue cheese, and chipotle mayo and it came with sweet potato fries. I don’t think everyone else enjoyed their burger quite as much as I did. I was getting really hungry during the hour and a half (I kid you not) that we waited for our food, and the hungrier I get, the grumpier I get. But it was worth the wait in my opinion. This also explains why I have no food pictures. I was so hungry, I just ate it. I savored it.
All of their food is SOL which means sustainable, organic and local. They buy their ingredients at the farmer’s market and from local farmers. How cool is that?! They also have a lot of vegetarian and gluten free options. The menu and atmosphere is so hip. There is graffiti all over the walls, which are made out of an old tin roof. Most of the seating is outdoors on picnic tables. There is even a play ground for the kiddos. They also have live music and a beer garden. It has a very funky feel to it…like maybe it is still stuck in the 60s. It was featured on Food Channel’s Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. I haven’t decided whether this place is a diner or a dive…but the food was fantastic!! Rumor has it, they are known for their fish tacos, so maybe we will have to give it another shot someday…when we have a lot of time.
If you have ever stumble across a restaurant that has been featured on Man vs. Food on the Travel Channel, you are a fool to walk by. We found Lulu’s Bakery and Cafe, home of the famous 3 pound cinnamon roll. Of course, we stopped for breakfast! I mean, how do you walk by a bench that looks like this and not want to eat there?!
It’s a very non-elegant building and had it not been featured on TV, I probably would have kept walking. It’s a little run down and could use a remodel. And you know me. I’m a big breakfast eater, so I ordered the 3 lb cinnamon roll. I ate the whole thing by myself.
I am such a jokster. But I did have a piece (the ooey gooey center <– best part of a cinnamon roll) and it was nice and sweet. Just make sure you don’t get a bite full of the cinnamon goo, it’s not a pleasant experience. We ordered the giant roll as an appetizer for 9 people and still took part of it home…
The Viper Pilot ordered their chicken fried steak. It was HUGE!! It is hard to get more Texan than an enormous chicken fried steak. If I recall correctly, they fry it once, dip it in buttermilk, and fry it again. Just looking at it causes your cholesterol to sky-rocket. Smelling it induces a heart attack. Almost everyone in the restaurant was eating the chicken fried steak so you know it must be good (I passed it up for biscuits and gravy) and I actually think I heard the person behind me moaning as they were eating it. Really nice eatin’ at Lulu’s. Let me put it this way, if you define a good restaurant by quantity, this is your place. If you have any regard for your health, pass on by. I think the appropriate choice of words are, “gut bomb,” heh heh!
I’m sorry to write two really long and loaded posts back to back like this. If you only knew how crazy busy our lives have been lately, you would understand that there really hasn’t been much time for me to write. {Thank you for understanding.} The good part is, I am slowly but surely getting you all caught up on our many adventures just in time for life to get crazy again!! But then again,
