How are you beating this Iowa heat?
Please excuse the baggy clothes. It was laundry day and I had to borrow some comfies from the Viper Pilot. |
We sit in front of the fan.
Just hang out.
And tie dye shirts with Sharpies.
Yep, with Sharpies. My mom found a blog (TheArtGirlJackie-tutorials.blogspot.com) that gave instructions to dye a shirt with Sharpie markers. We thought it looked like a cool project so we gave it a whirl.
Here’s what you need:
- pre-washed white or light colored t-shirt (cotton takes color great)
- rubbing alcohol
- liquid dropper (we used an old eye drop bottle, but a medicine dropper would work fine)
- plastic cups (we used different sizes)
- rubber band
- variety of colored Sharpie fine-point permanent markers (leave out brown and black)
- extra embellishments (we used an iron on peace symbol)
Step 1: Choose a spot on the shirt and place the cup right side up inside the shirt and secure a rubber band around the cup rim holding the shirt tightly in place.
Step 2: Pick you colors and create a small design about the size of a half-dollar in the center of the stretched circle. Note: remember that complimentary will colors will turn brown when they mix.
Step 3: Using your dropper, add several drops on the colored design and watch how the colors bleed and spread. We added a few dots on the outer edge of the circle to create a cool effect. Blowing on design as it spreads make the design an irregular circle and it also helps it dry faster.
Note: We had a piece of cardboard inside the shirt to prevent color bleeding on the back of the shirt.
The results are instant and very cool!
We did our design in a diagonal across the front (left the back white on purpose). Then we added smaller circles filling in different areas and overlapping some of them.
Toss the shirt in the dryer for a few minutes to heat set the colors before wearing. Add any embellishments to the shirt one it is dry. We used a sparkly iron on peace sign to the front.
This project was so easy and a lot of fun!
ENJOY!
