Last Friday, we the Viper Pilot moved us into our house. I was a little disappointed that I couldn’t help him, but considering the amount of stuff we had to move in with, I don’t think he had to work too hard…
But, our name is on the doorbell and we are officially home. It’s a great feeling. Apparently, if you have an appointment to get your phone or internet or any other service they won’t ring or notify you that they missed you if you don’t have your name on the doorbell. I have been going crazy not being able to blog, but I finally found a decent internet connection at the community center on base. We should have internet at our house by the end of the week. They actually haven’t called to arrange a time to come out to set it up…I believe that’s called “island time,” yeah?
It’s great to have a house, even if it is an empty one. Thankfully we have wood ceilings so it doesn’t echo too bad. The base provides us with temporary furniture to use until our shipment gets here. It’s nothing special, trust me, and the mattress is wrapped in plastic (we call it the crinkle cot), but it is better than nothing. I will post pictures of the inside of the house when we get our furniture, but in the mean time, I’ll give you a little sneak peek. It just looks so blah without any furniture in it.
{Insert random side note: As I sit here in the community center writing this, I met a guy wearing an Iowa Hawkeyes shirt! Oh and he had a Hawkeye tattoo (I guess that’s a legit fan…). Spreading Hawkeye love all the way out here in Germany! GO HAWKS!}
Like I mentioned before, the landlords actually live in the house. His work requires him to move to Saudi Arabia for 3 years so they are renting it to us while they are gone. They didn’t take most of their furniture, so we agreed to let them use one bedroom (that was in a really awkward part of the house anyway) as storage. They did leave out several of their larger pieces for us to use such as a gorgeous antique hutch and their patio furniture. We could never afford to buy something so nice at this point in our lives, so we are very grateful that we get to use it for the next few years! Lucky us! 😉
Unfortunately, the pictures from the last post about the house got removed because I had such a slow internet connection that I had to copy and paste them into the post from the online ad. Well, that quit working after they took the ad down, so I’ll repost some pictures of the yard.
Just outside the back deck is our very own vineyard!! I’m talking real grapes for wine making! We can’t wait to try our hand at making wine and we are also going to try brewing beer! |
Our garden house, complete with electricity. We are going to put in a bar on the deck and a Bitburger beer (local brew) fridge inside. |
The landscaping needs some TLC, but we think we’ll have it in tip-top shape in no time. |
I am also cleared hot to plant my own vegetable garden. I guess that will have to wait until next spring. We also have fruit trees in the yard: peach, cherry, plum, and apple. There will be a ton of apples ready in a few weeks! Apple pie, apple crisp, and all things apple will be happening very soon in this house!!
We had our friends over for dinner on our first night in the house. It wasn’t much (beer and frozen pizza for the adults, and Cherrios and milk for Caroline) but they’ve had us over to their house so many times since they moved in before we did, so we were so excited to have them over for a change!
The lighting in the dining room is going to be changed and soon. It’s ugly and it stinks at lighting the room. |
We had big plans for Saturday. A trip to the big city!! Where we live is pretty isolated from larger cities. We are about an hour from the other AF base in the country and they have the largest BX I’ve ever seen. You can get everything (except lawn games) there! We were planning to leave early but ended up sleeping in and having coffee on the back deck instead. We bought a ton of stuff there. Everything from kitchen appliances to a new desktop computer (woop!) to bathroom rugs to various 220 volt electronics. All tax-free. <– best part. Danke, Uncle Sam!
I haven’t mentioned Elmer in a while. She was having a tough time adjusting and absolutely hated being cooped up in the little apartment. We’d walk her down the driveway once or twice a day and that was the extent of her outdoor time. She moped around and was more or less depressed. We were worried about her when we got into the house (more change didn’t seem like a good idea), but once we let her off her leash in the huge backyard, she was one. happy. pup.
