I’ve tried almost every silly get-in-shape fad there ever was: tai-bo, pilates, skipping rope, yoga, weighted hula hooping, the bodyblade, wind-relieving asana, Cirque du Soleil-inspired aerial aerobics, step aerobics, canned soup aerobics, belly dancing, Wii Fit, the shake weight, dorm room workouts (thank you, Dr. Oz), fitness shoes, zumba…
Okay, maybe I didn’t try every silly fitness fad but I did try yoga and I really liked it. I found that I enjoy working one part of my body at a time and connecting the dots later. Here’s an example of my typical workout routine for any given week:
Monday: strength (i.e., arms & back)
Tuesday: strength (i.e., core)
Wednesday: yoga
Thursday: strength (i.e., legs)
Friday: rest or tabata/cardio
Saturday: tabata/cardio or rest
Sunday: church and rest
I’ve never really talked much about yoga on the blogeroo. The other night, I was having dinner with a friend and we started discussing yoga. It inspired me to write this post. So…why yoga?
{Inhale….}
Yoga is efficient, it can count as cardio, it’s not competitive, it saves money because you can do it anywhere, there are tons of videos online, you sound really cool when you tell people you practice yoga, it actually can help you lose weight because it boosts your metabolism, helloooo variety, reduced risk for injury, it makes you feel great, PLUS sometimes you lay flat on your back and get to call it “exercise.”
{Exhale…and return to downward facing dog.}
That being said, yoga is a big PLUS in my book. That’s why I have taken on the Yoga Journal’s 21-day Challenge to take a break from my usual routine, take my practice to the next level, and say namaste to a new me.

Day 1: cardio <– I actually broke a sweat! My breathing was choppy, yet controlled. But seriously, my downward-facing dog could use some practice…
