Better self control with my eating habits.
Meet Elle, good dog, self control level: expert.
Hello, my name is Emily and I’m a carboholic. Hot-buttered-bakery-fresh-pastry-pasta-potato-there’s-not-a-carb-I-don’t-love carboholic.
Despite my regular workout routine, I am starting to notice the post-holiday (mostly due to excessive carb consumption) weight showing up. My pants sort of feel like sausage skin. I initially confounded our German dryer for shrinking them but another thought occurred to me. I’ve slipped back into my carbohalic ways since the holidays. There is nothing wrong with carbs – I fo sho am a carby by nature – but sometimes too much of a good thing is a bad thing. You know what I mean, jelly bean?
When I (lived in the states and used to) go to Panera, I’d order the black bean soup in a bread bowl with a french baguette as the side. When I was a kid and all through high school, I used to make peanut butter sandwiches when no one was around and stash them in ziplock bags in my nightstand for a midnight snack.
{I would like to think my mom didn’t know about that until just now but then again, who was eating all the peanut butter and why were we going through so much bread? She did the grocery shopping. She knew.}
I love pasta and buttered bread and practically lived on carbs all through college (hey, don’t judge, Pasta-Roni was only $0.99!), but I have changed my ways since then. It is easy to slip back into old ways when you allow yourself to splurge on carbs like I did during the holidays, especially when you otherwise maintain a healthy lifestyle and eating habits.
I don’t regret letting myself splurge, but I guess I got so caught up in the travelling and other business that I forgot to go back to my usual healthy eating ways.
And I honestly haven’t had time to go to the store to get the fresh stuff restocked in our fridge. That’s an excuse, though, and excuses are not tolerated.
I’ve since learned that it’s okay to eat what you love (carbs, real sugar, carbs, salt, carbs, etc.), as long as you keep it in moderation. Life is too short to deny yourself the pleasure of your favorite foods, with the exception of maybe Krispy Kremes and the like. A little of a good thing is not necessarily a bad thing.
This requires some serious self control.
Lately, my diet has been about 80% carbohydrates: toast for breakfast, sandwich or pasta for lunch, and rigatoni with olive oil and fresh parm for dinner. Glory, glory. By all means I still eat my baby carrots and bananas, but my natural and fresh food consumption wasn’t like it used to be.
Okay, you guys, here is my favorite part of the post…I went to the grocery store after work today and did some serious damage to the produce section.
The check-out lady may have given me the stink eye since I bought ALL fruits and vegetables <– non-bar-coded items…sorry I’m not sorry. As I loaded my mini-farmer’s market into my car, I suddenly became cognizant of how amazing I was going to feel with fresh produce back in my life.
See you tomorrow as a healthier and happier me!! Let’s just call this my New Year’s Resolution. 🙂
PROST!
