I’ll just go ahead and say it. I kind of dread carrying a diaper bag. It’s a vanity issue. Is that petty?
The options in store are slim (sorry, I’m just not a Hello Kitty handbag type). Most diaper bags I can find are covered in huge neon polka dots, wild and crazy patterns, or (far worse) smothered in giraffes, monkeys, owls, kittens, and hippos, or something comparably kitschy.
I want, nay – NEED – something chic, simple, and practical. Something that looks more like a big purse than what our child might one day tote to preschool.
I want to find something classic and neutral so that it goes with everything (baby, my outfit, the stroller). The Viper Pilot will feel silly carrying any bag I go with, but he WILL carry it. He’s carried my purse before, not even with any reluctance, but I don’t ask that of him very often because I know he’s not a huge fan. 🙂
Another important detail in my hunt for the perfect bag: just like with any purse I buy, I must be able to put it on my shoulder without getting my elbow hooked under the straps. Ladies, I think you know what I’m talking about…
{Some might call this nesting. I call it serious business.}
I did some online shopping and was pleasantly surprised to find that many a designer has put my fears of the “big, ugly mom bag” to rest. And, bless their hearts, they’ve come up with a few options for us mommas looking for something a little more sleek.
Here are a few that have made the short list:

Whoa. Diaper bags have come a LONG way since even I had kiddos. You lucky girl. They are all adorable!

Be sure to buy one that stands on its own with or without a bunch of baby items inside. When you have your little one in one arm and you need to grab something all at once its helpful that the sides don't collapse. My 2 cents 🙂

We had several through the years. None of those Hello Kitty/Pooh bear things! I tried as hard as I could to carry the diaper bag but honestly, it rarely left the car. I either stuffed diapers/wipes in our backpack while hiking or changed him in the back of the SUV on a towel. (We used cloth diapers so they are more bulky than regular diaps.) Those bathroom diaper changing stations freak me out!

I like number 5! It looks much more casual than the others which I personally like. 🙂

I love 5 too!! Is it weird that I wish the bag was black with brown straps? Then it would go with everything…

I'm with Lisa! Sturdy sides! Also, little brass feet on the bottom and an extended zipper. Now you're talkin' serious cash! Good luck with the hunt — totally worth the effort. Have you checked Zappos yet???

Kate Spade FTW.

If I can convince the breadwinner in the family of this, we'd be good. The striped KS baby bag has me drooling!!
