Happy Birthday, Grandpa/Dad! Can you believe this was the last time you saw Owen??
We can’t wait to celebrate your birthday with beer and schnitzel. Sound good to you?
The Viper Pilot was away (he’s been gone a lot lately) when Owen and I took a day trip with friends to Brussels to see the famous flower carpet. This gorgeous display in the city’s main square started in 1971 by a landscape artist and only comes around once every two years.
Can you close your eyes and imagine? A colorful carpet of begonias vividly reflect light amid the ornate and distinguished buildings in the Grand-Place. It’s captivating.
It was a very drab day but the flower carpet was fresh and rich in vibrancy. The blossoms are laid by hand by over 100 volunteers just hours before opening night. We opted out of the opportunity to go up on a balcony to view from above (the line was long and in the rain) but we soaked up the view of the 750,000 flowers that transforms the historical city center from every (free) possible perspective.
The flower carpet this year marks the 50th anniversary of Turkish workers migrating to Belgium, so the carpet design paid homage to the Turkish culture depicting traditional patterns found in Turkish kilims. Thinking of planning a European getaway? Don’t miss the next flower carpet in summer 2016. I mean it.
PROST!
