1. Sweet corn.
Dripping in butter and sprinkled with salt and pepper. I have some growing in my garden, but I miss having it readily available almost all summer long like it is where I come from. There is no sweet corn in the world that can stand up to Iowa corn. If you’ve never had it, you’re bucket list needs to be updated. Since we’re on the topic of the great state of Iowa…
2. The Iowa State Fair.
The food, the fun, the crowds…I miss it so much! As this year’s slogan states, “nothing compares.” My mouth is drooling over the thought of the Iowa Pork Producers’ food and the concert line up this year looks fantastic…Casting Crowns, Dierks Bentley, Train, and Toby Keith? I’m so homesick right now it isn’t even funny. {Ahh-ha! Suddenly you don’t think of Iowa as a flyover state anymore, am I right? Go there. You won’t be sorry.}
3. Sweet tea.
I’m talkin’ ’bout a big ol’ glass o’ southern sweet tea, which was one of my favorite things about living in Mississippi. But the decaf kind because usually the sugar gives you enough of a rush. We hardly had any last summer because of how crazy it was and I haven’t gotten around to making it yet this summer, but it’s all I can think about. So I’m probably going to make some tonight. If only there were a way to ship that to the Viper Pilot…hmm…
4. This sunscreen on my face.
Not greasy, actually works, and doesn’t smell awful. You can buy it here.
5. Brightly hued nail polishes.
Currently sporting Color Club Reign in Spain on my tootsies, but I love all the colors in this collection.
6. Fresh fruit.
…that is, fresh fruit that didn’t come from the supermarket, rather from the strawberry patch (either in my garden or just up the road) or the farmer’s market.
7. Rolladens
In Germany, every window has a rolladen window shade. You will find these nifty do-hickies everywhere regardless of how old or new the building is. The way they work is simple. If you want it to be day, you simply keep the shade up.
If it is a hot day and you don’t want to the glaring sun heating up the house or if you just don’t want that much light in the room, you simple pull the cord next the window and lower the rolladen to your liking.
And if it is bed time (or nap time in the middle of the day) but the sun is still out (currently the sun sets here around 9:40 pm so it is light out till roughly 10/10:30) and you need to turn the lights out, pull the cord and lower the rolladen all the way down.
Please pardon my dying roses… |
Basically, they’re like blackout curtains, but way way way better.
8. A good summer reading list with the assistance of Goodreads (introduced to me by my sister). Create an account, review a few books and be prepared for oodles and oodles of recommendations made just for you!! I just finished reading Something Borrowed (you may have seen the movie, but as usual, the book is so much better) and I started on the sequel Something Blue written by Emily Griffin. The behavior of these girls is all wrong, but it’s just so juicy, I can’t put it down. The books were gifts from my dear sweet friend, Kristin. I also highly suggest Zero Day by David Baldacci, one of my all-time faves.
9. Reading a good book outside.
The past few days when the weather has been remarkably wonderful, I’ve planted myself in this chair after dinner to do my before bed reading. There’s usually a nice breeze and the smell of the flowers in my garden are lovely.
10. The beach.
This was taken on our honeymoon at Trunk Bay in St. John, US Virgin Islands and is also happens to be my most favorite beach of all the ones I’ve ever been too. However, at this current point and time, I don’t really care what beach it is so long as my toes are in the sand. We’re planning a trip to the southern coast of Portugal or Spain before the baby is born and yes, my belly will be planted in the sand for an entire week. I hope they have beach side waiters because someone will need to bring me food.
What tops your list of fave things about summer? I don’t know about your neck of the woods but I feel like we’ve waited and waited and waited for summer to get here and now that it finally has, I can’t seem to get enough of it. Now, off to make some sweet tea…
