Just the cutest, fluffiest, four-legged creature that we all know and love…ELMER!
Who was perfectly content snoozing in her favorite spot. That is, of course, after zooming around the house and her backyard at Mach 1 because she was so happy to be back in her territory.
We had a wonderful weekend, despite the record breaking low temperatures. It has been in the 60s/70s here lately, but the weekend the ‘rents show up from Iowa, we dip down into the 30s/40s and it even sleeted while they were here. They left yesterday and I kid you not, it was 73 today. I swear they brought the cold weather with them. Crazy northerners…
We watched a movie (Moneyball) and it was REALLY good. It is especially good for those who like baseball. I just like it because of Brad Pitt…drool…
We also baked. Mom and I made a pie for my awesome neighbors, and then we made mini cherry pies. I wore the super cute apron my mother-in-law-to-be MADE for me! It’s so me. 🙂
I’ll give you the recipe for the cherry pies, but ONLY if you promise to eat them all while they are still warm. THEY DON’T REHEAT WELL. I’m serious…we debated whether we would make them again.
Puff Pastry Cherry Blossoms
from “get off your butt and bake”

- Pie filling of your choice (we used cherries)
- Egg wash (one beaten egg)
- Turbinado sugar
- Glaze:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
- 1-1/2 Tbsp of milk or orange juice (see note below)
My parents have only seen campus at night from the car tour I gave them a while back. So, we bundled up (ha), grabbed some coffee and I took them on a little walking tour. I also showed them where I worked, some of the work I’m doing right now, and the super computers. I’m talking about incredibly powerful computers. 3072 processor cores, 6 TB (Terabytes) of memory with a peak performance of 34.4 teraFLOPS (trillion calculations per second). Since I’m on a roll here, we have the 115th most powerful computer in the world, and the 16th most powerful computer at any academic site in the United States, as of 2006. I could go on, but you don’t care. But yes, I do get to use these bad boys. They take up an entire room. My parents were impressed. 🙂 Their daughter is such a nerd and they’re okay with that –> awesome parents.

It is always really sad when they leave. I had to teach the day they left so that helped keep my mind busy. My students did a really great job with the lesson. The lesson was about how to find the area of irregular shapes. They traced their shoes onto a piece of paper and broke it down into regular shapes (which we can find the area of using formulas) and calculated the area. It was fun to see how creative they got with it. I’m bragging again, but I was really proud of my students!!
“Dang him. He wasn’t supposed to do this.”
As if it was her fault…? Haha.
When I called to thank him, I reminded him that I told him to save his money this year, since we get to see each other this weekend, but his response to that was,
“You didn’t honestly think you could get away with that, did you?”
I think I’ll keep him.
Yes, that’s right. We get to see each other this weekend. And I am SO EXCITED because we’re going to Colorado Springs!! Woo!! We have some final wedding details to iron out so our time is pretty well booked with vendors and such, but it is going to be SO much fun. I imagine I’ll have a post + pictures from our trip!
Well, I’m off to work on more wedding stuff and study my German. I’m trying so hard to learn the language, it’s not as difficult as you might think, but it is hard to remember everything. And heck, I can barely conjugate in the English language. The other thing I don’t get: why is a lamp feminine? Just how am I supposed to remember that?! Once the Viper Pilot gets his orders, we will be able to get Rosetta Stone which I’ve heard is amazing. I just thought I’d get a jump start with my little German Demystified work book. 🙂 I’m just too excited for words.
